Lately, we’ve been craving a new hobby—something fun and creative that doesn’t revolve around dinner reservations or happy hour. That’s how we ended up at the Glassell School of Art, right in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. As part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Glassell School offers a full lineup of adult art classes that cover the basics and go way beyond. From painting and ceramics to book-making, jewelry design, and film photography, there’s something here for anyone looking to tap into their creative side.

What surprised us the most was how approachable everything felt. You don’t need to have any prior experience to jump in. Whether you’re a total beginner or someone who hasn’t picked up a paintbrush in years, there are classes designed to meet you where you’re at. We got to peek into a few ongoing sessions and were immediately struck by how welcoming the vibe was. Every classroom had a mix of students of all ages, which made the space feel inclusive and inspiring. It was cool to see everyone working at their own pace, focused and completely in the zone.

We also have to talk about the space itself! The Glassell building is a work of art in its own right. Massive concrete staircases zigzag through the interior, creating dramatic lines and open spaces that are waiting to be photographed. It makes you feel more creative just by being there.

If you’re curious, summer registration is still open, and fall sign-ups are coming soon at mfah.org/studioschool. The courses range in length and topic, so you can commit as much or as little time as you want. There are even classes for teens aged 15–18, which is a great option for high schoolers who want to dive deeper into the arts. Trying something new can be intimidating, but the Glassell School of Art makes it feel exciting!
